At the 2025 NON-COMMvention, public radio leaders gathered to celebrate the music, community, and shared mission that define noncommercial music — but this year’s event carried a clear sense of urgency.
NPR’s Marta McLellan Ross addressed the growing threats to public media, ...including proposed budget cuts and the potential rollback of already-approved federal funds. These resources are vital — not just for programming, but for music licensing, local journalism, and the ability to reach rural and underserved communities. Without them, the future of public radio as we know it is at risk.
Her message was clear: now is the time for action. Whether through community outreach, sharing local impact stories, or engaging decision-makers, public media supporters have a critical role to play in protecting this unique and essential service.

🎶 Live from Knoxville, it’s the Blue Plate Special! 🎶
Every weekday at noon, downtown Knoxville transforms into a stage—thanks to WDVX, the fiercely independent public radio station broadcasting live music straight from the Knoxville Visitor Center. Locals, tourists, and ...music lovers alike pack the room for a one-of-a-kind experience that blends Appalachian roots with genre-bending discovery.
And the artists? Before they became household names, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, Margo Price, and St. Paul & The Broken Bones all graced the ‘Blue Plate Special’ stage.
WDVX started in a 14-foot camper with just 10 watts of power and a dream—to make music that matters, for the people who need it most. No big corporate backers. No syndication deals. Just real radio with real soul, created by and for the community.
This is public radio at its most authentic.

An executive order threatens the future of public radio music.
What happens if local music stations disappear?
We lose more than music — we lose discovery, diversity, and the cultural threads that connect us. Public radio music brings human-curated content, supports... local talent, and educates through art and history.
And an executive order is threatening it all.
🎶 Now is the time to protect the stations that speak for — and with — your community.

An executive order aims to infringe upon the independence of local stations. The order poses a massive threat to public radio music and noncommercial music.
Public radio music stations are more than just background noise — they’re lifelines for local culture, education, and ...connection.
Federal funding helps keep vital, culturally rich genres alive — ones that rarely find space on commercial airwaves. This funding also supports local artists and amplifies community voices.
With this new executive order, stations could go silent — and with them, the heart of your community.
🎧 Speak up. Stand with public music.

An executive order aims to infringe upon the independence of local stations. This would be devastating for noncommercial music and public radio music.
For many local stations, federal support is the foundation that keeps them operating. It allows them to maintain equipment, staff ...their programming, and provide consistent service to the public. If this support is severely restricted, some stations will not survive. This order jeopardizes music stations’ ability to serve their communities with pride, consistency, and purpose.
